Harvest Report - July 21, 2006
HRW
An additional 48 samples were received from the hard red winter harvesting area this week.
  • South Dakota winter wheat harvest moved at a rapid pace and is near completion. Only a few samples remain to be picked up in this area. Spring wheat harvest is now underway.
  • Early wheat samples from southeast Colorado have been milled, and flour results show an average farinograph stability of 10.6 minutes, good absorption at 61.0% and alveograph W value of 283. This is the southeast area only.
  • Eastern Wyoming samples show a wheat protein average of 12.3% with a test weight average of 57.0 lb/bu (75.1 kg/hl).
  • Very limited flour data is in from Nebraska (wheat samples were just completed this week), but stabilities appear acceptable at greater than 12.0 minutes, and W values are strong.
  • Montana harvest is sporadic with the southern portion near Billings moving at a rapid pace. Other areas are not expected to start for perhaps seven to ten days. The Golden Triangle area near Great Falls is receiving some early maturing varieties, but full-fledged cutting is a few days away.

Overall, conditions have been hot and dry in most areas, effecting the condition of the crop and shrinking some of the kernels. Proteins remain high with the cumulative average at 13.9%. Falling numbers remain strong overall, and the crop is continuing to grade #1.

New crop transition has been reported as relatively uneventful, and questions about the functionality of this year’s protein have been subdued with the relative ease of transition, thus far.
