Harvest Report - June 27, 2008
HRW
HRW harvest all across the Midwest is picking up speed.

Texas reports wheat harvest is about 70% complete in the Texas Panhandle. However, early in the week harvest was delayed in some areas due to rain. Test weights have been averaging around 58 lbs per bushel (76.4 kg/hl) with protein averaging 13% to 14%. Dryland yields in the Panhandle are averaging 8 to 15 bushels per acre with irrigated yields averaging 50 to 60 bushels per acre. Statewide, wheat is 70% harvested, compared to about 40% this time last year.

Oklahoma reports continued harvest activity over the weekend and through the week. Most of the custom cutters have left the state as harvest activity increases in Kansas. They are estimating Oklahoma to be in excess of 75% complete with this harvest. Significant acres remain to be harvested through the center of the state (about 70% complete), just north of Enid (projected to be 65% complete). Northeast and east of Enid, where combines are still having problems staying out of the mud, is now projected at 15% complete and the Panhandle projected to be 50% complete at this point. Yields in the Panhandle are a stark contrast to last year as dryland wheat is almost nonexistent with most yield reports being from in the teens to abandonment. Irrigated acres are reported from 50 bushels to the acre and lower.

In Kansas, the first week of harvest is ending better than it began. Favorable weather has accelerated the harvest pace since the weather turned hot and dry on Wednesday. There is harvest activity throughout the entire state. If the low humidity and heat continue through the weekend, the Kansas harvest could be more than a third complete by the end of the weekend. Test weights are averaging over 60 pounds per bushel (78.9 kg/hl) and protein is reported to be ranging anywhere from 9% to 13.5% with most averaging 11.5% to 12%.

Nebraska reports producers are anxiously awaiting the start of the harvest season. Expectations are high for above average yields. With favorable weather next week, harvest should be in full swing across Nebraska soon after the July 4th weekend.
