Harvest Report - July 30, 2004

Hard Red Winter
Hard red winter harvest progressed rapidly in the past week in South Dakota with warmer temperatures and dry conditions for the early portion of the week. Hard red winter wheat harvest in South Dakota is being reported as 75% complete. Rain and hail later in the week slowed some areas in southeast South Dakota. Conditions overall are spotty with rainfall varying drastically within regions of the state. The hot, humid conditions are triggering numerous thunderstorms across the midsection of the United States.

Nebraska is reporting harvest at approximately 95% complete. The past week has provided lower than normal temperatures and heavy rains again in the southwest corner of the state.

Montana hard red winter wheat maturation is reported behind normal with only about 70% turning color. This is significantly behind last year at 93% and behind the five-year average of 89%.

The 2004 HRW harvest has been marked by an earlier start than normal, significant weather, raising issues of concern with both falling number and potential scab, and what will more than likely be a later than normal completion date.

Soft White
The 2004 Pacific Northwest harvest has started at a slightly slower pace when compared to last year. This week’s soft white samples mainly consist of 30% each from north central Oregon and east central Washington and 22% from northeastern Oregon. The first week’s limited number of samples indicate higher test weight at 60.5 lb/bu (79.6 kg/hl) compared to 59.4 lb/bu (78.2 kg/hl) for last year’s crop final average, higher wheat moisture content at 9.5% compared to 9.0% last year, heavier thousand kernel weight at 41.1 g last year, the same protein at 10.4%, and sound falling number value at 359 sec. The initial indication of this year’s Pacific Northwest soft white crop appears to be big and plump, indicating a good milling quality, similar to the last five-year average protein content, and very little sprout damage, if any.
