Harvest Report - October 8, 2004

Hard Red Winter
Three additional samples were received this week allowing two more areas to be finalized for the 2004 hard red winter harvest. Those areas were east central Colorado and central South Dakota.

East Central Colorado
  • This area of Colorado showed a preponderance of higher protein samples with 65% being reported at greater than 12.5%, with the actual average of this group being 14.1%.
  • Falling number values overall were a respectable 305.
  • Farinograph tolerance for the entire area and all protein ranges varied from only 10.0 to 11.5 minutes.
  • Alveograph W values were also consistent across all protein ranges in the area, from 294-324.
  • Bakes showed marginal grain and texture and low volumes.

Central South Dakota
  • Protein in this area was almost evenly spread across the three groups of <11.5%, 11.5-12.5% and >12.5%.
  • Overall protein average was 12.8%
  • Falling number values overall were strong with an average of 444.
  • Tolerance averaged 13.5 minutes.
  • Alveograph W values were reasonable with an average 390.
  • Bakes were average to good.

The final areas of Montana will be completed next week bringing a close to the USW HRW report.

Durum
The 2004 durum wheat harvest continued at a slow rate because of cool weather. As of October 3, according to the North Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service office, harvest is 74% complete, behind 100% for last year and 94% for the five-year average. Grain quality did not change from the previous week.
