Harvest Report - July 2, 2009

Hard Red Winter
Hard red winter harvest continues to move northward and westward in the Great Plains with Oklahoma and Texas wrapping up most areas (99%). Far western areas of both states (Panhandles) are winding down and should be mostly complete by the end of the 4th of July holiday.

The Kansas harvest continues to move northward and the isolated areas that experienced moisture over the past few weeks are now being harvested. While there is still no data available from Kansas, anecdotal evidence suggests very good but also very erratic test weights. The areas that received significant May precipitation generally have higher test weights than those areas that did not.

Northeastern Colorado harvest has been delayed by storms. However, because of moisture while the crop was maturing, areas from Colorado into Nebraska are expecting good yields and very good test weights.

Texas and Oklahoma continue to show very high protein, averaging over 13%. Test weights are averaging above 58 lb/bu (76.4 kg/hl). The biggest problem continues to be volume of production which is as low as 10% - 25% of normal in many areas. As harvest moved through northern Oklahoma and into southern Kansas the yields have been erratic with variations of 5 to 50 bushels per acre from one field to the next. This variability results from several factors including late moisture, variety, conventional vs. no-till, planting date, freeze damage, management, etc.

Soft Red Winter
Soft red winter harvest is progressing rapidly through the entire growing region and nearing completion in Illinois and southern Indiana, with lower test weights and inconsistent yields being the major concerns. Sampling has been completed in Kentucky, North Carolina, Arkansas and Virginia and has started in Maryland. Missouri is just about completed, with the exception of the northernmost areas, and southern Ohio began earlier this week. Most of the locations sampled have indicated a very short time frame from beginning to the end of harvest (a week or less) with just two or three hectic days.

Northern Arkansas has had a large decrease in test weight compared to 2008 data and a slight increase in protein. Falling number values are consistent with last year. This follows the trend seen from the southern and central areas of the state. Laboratory milling data are indicating a lower flour yield than last year for the central part of the state. The flour data is similar to last year.

In northern North Carolina, the milling yields from the lab have also been lower than last year. The farinograph absorption is lower despite the higher protein average.

Partial data from Kentucky is showing a downward trend in test weight compared to 2008 with a slight increase in protein. Falling number averages are lower than last year but still above 300. Early data from Virginia is trending exactly the same as Kentucky
