Harvest Report - June 15, 2007

Hard Red Winter
HRW harvest has gotten off to a slow start in Texas and Oklahoma. This area has received widespread rain over the last several weeks, delaying combines from getting into the fields. A freeze Easter weekend (April 8), rust, and various other diseases have reduced the quality and/or yield in some areas. The number of abandoned acres is increasing rapidly. Although harvest is just getting ready to start in Kansas, much of the state has suffered from at least one of the same problems indicated above. Data is not available at this time because of the rain across the south making sample collection difficult.

Soft Red Winter
Early SRW sampling in Central Arkansas is complete as of June 13 with average test weight very similar to last year. Protein has increased by approximately 1% and 1000 kernel weight is also higher. All falling number values are above 330.

Sampling has also been completed in Southern Arkansas with few weather related delays this year. Average test weight and 1000 kernel weight are higher than last year. Protein average has increased and falling number values are above 300. Compared to early samples, test weight and 1000 kernel weight both show an increase while protein average is unchanged

Harvesting has begun in Kentucky and will begin in Illinois by the weekend, weather permitting. Early samples in North Carolina have been collected, but wet conditions have slowed the harvest.
