Hard Red Winter

The Colorado hard red winter harvest continued this week with ideal weather conditions. Around the Flagler area, harvest is 80% to 90% complete. Protein levels in that area have been averaging above 12% and test weights have been around 60 to 61 lbs/bu (78.9 to 80.2 kg/hl). Harvest in the northeastern part of the state is 50% to 60% complete. Reports of test weight have been averaging 61 lbs/bu (80.2 kg/hl) with protein levels around 10% to 10.5%. Harvest in Nebraska has picked-up dramatically. Wheat quality has been variable, but overall relatively good. Yield reports in the southeast have been ranging between 12 to 40 bushels per acre. The south central part of the state has been reporting yields between 40 to 60 bushels per acre. In the southwest, initial reports of test weight and protein have been around 60 lbs/bu (78.9 kg/hl) and 11% to 12%, respectively. The USDA indicated that as of July 14, wheat conditions are rated 4% very poor, 9% poor, 29% fair, 48% good and 10% excellent.

Soft Red Winter

Another strong week of harvesting has enabled sampling completion in all but Northern Indiana. Overall, the cumulative averages are consistent with the exception of a slight increase in defects from 0.8% to 1.0%. Cumulative grade remains a US #1. Compared to 2007, the protein is down about 0.5%, and test weight is up 0.7 lb/bu or 0.8 kg/hl. Dockage is down from 1% last year to 0.8% this year.
Yields continue to range from 50-80 bu/acre in much of the area; although, Missouri growers have reported as low as 20 bu/acre in several locations. Protein is averaging from 9.1% to 10.3% across the region. With the exception of southern Ohio, falling number values have been 300+ on average; southern Ohio's average is 283. The 1000 kernel weight has increased over last year's average in samples from Ohio, Maryland and Virginia.
On the lab scale milling, yield has increased over last year in the samples milled this week from Kentucky and North Carolina. Flour ash has been very good across the entire growing region.
