Hard Red Spring
Approximately 85% of the hard red spring samples have been collected and analyzed. The average test weight for the region, 60.9 lb/bu, (80.1 kg/hl) is 1.1 lb/bu higher than the five-year average (59.8 lb/bu or 78.7 kg/hl). The average wheat protein content is 14.3 percent which is the same as the five-year average. The falling number average remained high at 423 seconds. The five-year average falling number is 376 seconds. Dockage and the grading factor averages stayed the same for the week. The average grade for the region is 1 DNS. The regional average vitreous kernel content is 82%. If the weather remains dry for the next few days the HRS wheat harvest in the region will be completed.

Soft White
Harvest in all three Pacific Northwest states is almost finished.  The National Agricultural Statistics Office reported that 82%, 95%, and 93% of the crop has been harvested in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington, respectively as of August 24, 2003.  Of the 68 soft white samples received this week, 32% came from east central Washington, 18% came from northern Idaho, 14% came from southeastern Idaho, 12% came from southeastern Washington, and 11% came from northeastern Oregon.  This week’s cumulative data showed that all grading factors remained similar to last week’s data.  Moisture changed by 0.1 percentage point to 8.9%.  Protein (12% mb) and falling number (14% mb) remained unchanged at 10.4% and 461 seconds, respectively.  Thousand kernel weight slightly decreased and wheat ash increased a little.
