Harvest Report - August 25, 2005 |
Hard Red Winter
|
An additional 36 HRW samples have been received, bringing the total very near completion.
The following are highlights of additional areas which were completed for wheat information this week:
- West Oklahoma reported a very broad range of protein from 8.4% to 12.8% (on 12% moisture basis). Moisture was low with 77% of this area below 11%.
- North central Oklahoma also reported some low proteins with the range being from 8.4% to 11.5% (12.0% MB). Within this area, 22% was below 10% protein. Tolerance was an acceptable 11 minutes, and W value for this area was 288.
- Southwest Oklahoma is complete with proteins ranging from 9.0% to 12.0% and test weights from 56 to 60 lb/bu (73.8 to 78.9 kg/hl). Tolerance was, again, an acceptable 11 minutes with a good W value of 351.
- North Central Texas finished with an average 10-minute tolerance and 255 W value. Average protein for this area was 11.6%.
- Texas Panhandle is reporting an 8.0-minute tolerance with a 274 W value. Test weights, however, were averaging 59.7 lb/bu (78.6 hg/hl).
- Central Kansas reported 10.5-minute stability with 319 W values. Proteins, however, were inconsistent with a range of 8.6 to 12.4%. The majority was well above 11.0%.
- Eastern Colorado reported some disappointing test weights from 46 to 58 lb/bu (60.8 to 76.4 kg/hl).
- Central South Dakota reported more consistent proteins from the 11–12% range and a narrower range of test weights, from 56–60 lb/bu (73.8 to 78.9 kg/hl). As yet, there are no flour and bake results for this area.
Hard red winter harvest is winding down with a few remaining samples expected from Montana. Additional flour and bake data will be available next week now that the majority of samples have been received.

Hard Red Spring
|
The spring wheat harvest was slowed by widespread precipitation last week in the eastern part of the HRS wheat region. Fifty percent of the samples have been collected and analyzed for wheat quality. Wheat grade data represents 122 of the 177 samples. The average wheat protein content is 14.6%, up from last year's average of 13.8%. The average test weight of 59.6 lb/bu (78.4 kg/hl) is lower than last year's average of 61.1 lb/bu (80.4 kg/hl). The falling number average remains over 400 seconds indicating a sound crop. Average DH&V is 69% which is down from last year's average of 74%. The average grade after the second week of harvest is 1NS. Regional HRS wheat protein content breaks down into 47% high (>14.5%), 38% mid-range (13.5%-14.5%), and 15% low (<13.5%) compared to last year's breakdown of 29% high, 37% mid, and 34% low. There are some areas in the eastern part of the HRS wheat region that have higher amounts of scab damage with higher DON levels. However, as the sample collection moves west in the region there seems to be somewhat lower amounts of scab (fusarium head blight) at this time.

Soft White
|
The 2005 Pacific Northwest soft white wheat harvest is approaching the end in Oregon, but Washington and Idaho are about one week behind when compared to last year and five-year-averages. This week's SW samples are mainly from east central, northeastern, and southeastern Washington and northern, southeastern, and south central Idaho. The crop average data after the fifth week show the same test weight at 60.1 lb/bu (79.1 kg/hl), the same moisture at 8.6%, and the same thousand kernel weight at 33.5 gm as last week's cumulative averages. Average protein slightly decreased to 9.9%, falling number value increased slightly to 351 seconds, and whole meal wet gluten slightly decreased to 22.9% when compared to last week.

Durum
|
The 2005 durum harvest was off to a good start. As of August 22, according to the North Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service office, harvest is 32% complete, ahead of 15% for last year and 24% for the five-year average. As of August 25, the average test weight was 59.8 lb/bu (77.9 kg/hl), lower than 61.7 lb/bu (80.3 kg/hl) for the 2004 crop. The average wheat protein content was 14.4%, higher than last year's 13.4%. The average dockage was 1.6% compared to 1.2% for last year. The falling number average was 438 seconds indicating the crop is sound, thus far. We have not received any preliminary grading information.
