Harvest Report - August 13, 2008

Hard Red Winter
The hard red winter harvest continues to move northward. With harvest complete in the south and central Great Plains region, the focus is now on the northern Great Plains. This week Wyoming estimates harvest is 90% complete. South Dakota reports 70-75% complete, but harvest was again interrupted by rain. Yields are reported to be above average, but quality remains uncertain. While some areas report test cutting, harvest still has not begun in Montana. On average, HRW harvest is two to three weeks behind.

Soft Red Winter
The soft red winter harvest is complete. The analysis of the 359 SRW samples was completed as of July 25, and showed 9.8% protein, 59.7 lb/bu (78.6 kg/hl) test weight, 0.8% damage and falling number 332 compared to data from 2007 which showed 10.3% protein, 59.8 lb/bu test weight (78.7 kg/hl), 0.3% damage and a 344 falling number value.

Hard Red Spring
The following is reprinted from the North Dakota Wheat Commission Crop Progress Report of August 12.

Dry conditions most of last week allowed producers to make steady progress harvesting their HRS crop, although progress is still well behind average. The U.S. HRS crop is now 16 percent harvested, up 10 points from last week, but still behind the average of 36 percent. Harvest completion rates range from 7 percent in Minnesota to 34 percent in South Dakota. Precipitation that fell over the weekend and beginning of the current week will keep producers from harvesting until fields dry out. Dry conditions are needed to push along harvest progress and maintain quality.

Initial reports indicate a wide variance in protein for the HRS crop. Protein levels have been anywhere in the range of 13-17 percent around the region and an average is hard to determine since we are in the very early stages of harvest and HRS has been slow to enter the supply chain. Lighter test weights have been reported in the western areas of the region as expected, however, a region-wide average it tough to determine at this time. We expect that as we see more harvest in the eastern areas, test weights will improve. As more of the crop is harvested this week, a more accurate measure of protein and test weight will be determined. Crop conditions declined this week, although the crop condition ratings become less important as the crop reaches harvest. Fifty-three percent of the U.S. HRS crop is rated in good to excellent condition, down from 56 percent the previous week. The crop is rated the lowest in Montana and North Dakota where yields have been affected by the drought conditions. The U.S. yield for spring wheat was lowered slightly this month from 36.8 bushels per acre to 36.4 bushels in USDA's crop production report.

Soft White
The Pacific Northwest wheat harvest is about one week behind in Oregon and Washington, and two weeks slower in Idaho compared to the same time last year. This week’s SW samples mainly consist of 61 percent from east central and northeastern Washington and 26 percent from north central and northeastern Oregon. Dry weather is pushing this year’s harvest in the Pacific Northwest. This week’s sample averages had the following changes from last week: test weight increased slightly to 59.3 lb/bu (78.0 kg/hl), moisture content increased 0.4 to 8.9 percentage points, protein remained the same at 11.0 percentage points, and falling number value increased slightly to 336 seconds.

Durum
The following is reprinted from the North Dakota Wheat Commission Crop Progress Report of August 12.

Durum crop conditions declined again over the last week, 21 percent of the North Dakota crop is in good to excellent condition and 39 percent is rated poor to very poor. In Montana the situation is similar with 22 percent of the durum crop rated in good to excellent condition and 49 percent rated poor to very poor. As with HRS, the crop condition ratings become less relevant as harvest progress is made. Yield prospects have declined rapidly in the last 6 weeks. In the USDA's most recent crop production report, yields in Montana were forecasted at 21 bushels per acre, the same as last month, but down from 24 bushels the previous year. The North Dakota durum yield was lowered from 27 bushels per acre to 25 bushels this month and down from 30 bushels last year. In North Dakota, 79 percent of the crop has turned ripe and 86 percent in Montana has turned ripe, both of which are ahead of average. Harvest progress of the durum crop is close to average with 13 percent of the North Dakota crop and 17 percent of the Montana crop harvested. Very little quality data is available, but lower test weights are anticipated in the drought stricken areas.
