Harvest Report - October 8, 2002 - Final |
Hard Red Winter
|
The 2002 hard red winter wheat production is estimated at 609 million bushels (16.58 MMT), the lowest since 1970. This is down 16% from the 2001 crop level. The persistent drought condition throughout the Great Plains region is primarily responsible for this significant drop in production. The HRW crop data exhibited significant variations from state to state and also within specific areas of some states. The overall protein content of 13.3% on a 12% moisture basis is more than 1 percentage point above the 2001 crop average. Test weight has dropped below 60.0 lbs/bu (78.9 kg/hl) causing the current crop to average 2 HRW. Falling number results again are above 400 seconds, indicating that sprout damage is not an issue with the 2002 crop. Flour data indicate acceptable milling yields and increased farinograph absorption with good mixing and baking performance.

Soft Red Winter
|
Soft red winter wheat production is down 17% from 2001 with the total production estimated at 332 million bushels (9.04 MMT). Most states have indicated lower yields due to excessive spring rains in the Ohio Valley and adjacent areas. Grade data averaged 2 SRW with the average falling number above 360 seconds. Test weight is slightly above last year with the protein content showing no significant change from 2001.

Hard Red Spring
|
The hard red spring harvest is completed and all of the samples have been collected and the protein range composite quality analysis is underway. This week's data changed very little from last week with the exception of falling number. The average falling number value of 339 seconds dropped from last week's average of 368 seconds. With this drop in falling number we can tell that there is some sprouting in some areas, especially the northern part of the HRS wheat growing region.
Below is a table with preliminary data to be used in the USW Crop Quality report. This information is subject to further change.

Soft White
|
The 2002 soft white wheat harvest is now complete in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. Four-hundred and ten soft white and 74 white club samples were received and tested this year. This year's soft white crop shows lower test weight and smaller kernels for both SW and WC, and lower protein for SW and WC compared to last year's crop averages. Falling number values indicate sound kernels.
Below is a table with preliminary data to be used in the USW Crop Quality report. This information is subject to further change.

Durum
|
Sample collection and harvest for the 2002 durum crop is complete. The following comments are based on production adjusted composite averages. The average test weight is 59.9 lb/bu (78.8 kg/hl) compared to 58.8 lb/bu (77.4 kg/hl) last year and 59.4 lb/bu (78.2 kg/hl) for the five-year average. The average protein is 14.0% (12%mb) compared to 14.4% last year and 14.2% for the five-year average. The average falling number is 292 sec, down from 355 sec last year and the five-year average of 307 sec. The average grade is a 2 HAD, the same as last year and the five-year average. The averages for total damage and total defects are 2.1% and 3.3%, respectively, compared to 2.7% and 5.0% last year.
