Harvest Report - August 6, 2004

Hard Red Winter
Hard red winter wheat harvest has now moved into Montana with cutting in the golden triangle of Great Falls, Billings and Big Sandy almost completed. However, other limited areas of Montana are still maturing. Warm weather and minimal precipitation have advanced turning to approximately the same progress as last year at this time with 97% turned. HRW production is down in Montana with more of the northeastern area being given over to hard red spring. Samples from this area will be coming soon, but at this time, no wheat information is yet available.
South Dakota harvest is considered near completion with 85% reported complete. Overall falling numbers are over 300.
Falling number values have been the major concern of this year's HRW harvest with some of the following being reported:
    • Colorado as low as 161 FN value.
    • Parts of Nebraska, 62 FN value.

All samples have been received from Oklahoma and Texas with samples still to be received from Kansas, Colorado and Nebraska.

    Soft White
The 2004 Pacific Northwest wheat harvest is moving at a slightly slower pace than the 2003 crop. This week's SW samples mainly consist of 38% from east central Washington, 22% from northeastern Oregon, 16% from southeastern Washington, and 12% from north central Oregon. This week's samples indicated slightly dryer moisture content at 9.0% compared to 9.5% for last week, slightly higher protein content at 10.7% compared to 10.4% last week, slightly lower thousand kernel weight at 40.3 g compared to 41.1 g last week, and sound falling number value at 365 seconds. The early indication of this year's Pacific Northwest soft white crop appears to be big and plump, indicating a good milling quality, slightly higher protein content than last year and the five-year average, and very little sprout damage, if any.
