Hard Red Winter
The 2012 HRW wheat harvest is quickly winding down in Colorado and Nebraska. Kansas and southern states are nearly complete with harvest at 99%. The harvest moved into South Dakota last week and the same trend continues with an extremely early harvest and a wide range of yield and quality reports. South Dakota yield reports have ranged from 25 bushels per acre to well over 60, with several producers expecting much higher yields as harvest continues. As has been the case in the more southern states, early reports of protein have also been very erratic, but generally higher overall, varying below 10% to many areas reporting well over 13%. Test weights have been very good with most reports being over 60 pounds per bushel. Overall, South Dakota producers have been very pleased with the crop so far and like many areas the weather has been hot and dry with spring wheat and summer crops showing signs of drought stress.

There are now 261 samples in the lab with all individual grade and non-grade testing done on those samples. We have an additional 92 samples in the lab in various stages of testing for kernel characteristics. Protein dropped this week and preliminary results from the samples still in the process indicate that the protein average will decline again next week. However, it also appears that test weight and thousand kernel weights will likely increase next week.

Soft Red Winter
The SRW harvest is winding down and all samples are expected to be in the lab by next week. There are just a few remaining sections of northern Ohio to sample at this time. This has been one of the earliest harvests on record for the entire region. The states that have not officially completed harvest (Indiana, Illinois, Ohio) have all harvested between 70% and 95% compared to 32%, 65%, and 8%, respectively, in 2011. Most areas saw very good yields with reports ranging from 40 bu/acre to some unofficial reports of 90 bu/acre. According to USDA statistics, 8.3 million SRW acres were planted this year with a projected average winter wheat yield of 47 bu/acre.

The overall data includes almost 100 more samples tested this week with no significant changes to the cumulative results.

In North Carolina, average test weight is lower than last year (58 lb/bu compared to 60), and falling number value average is lower than last year (280 compared to 350) while protein is unchanged. Missouri has shown an increase in average test weight of almost 3 lb/bu, compared to last year, while protein is down just slightly. The early milling tests from Missouri indicate a higher flour yield with similar baking and physical dough testing performance to last year. Southern Indiana has a higher test weight average this year (60.95 vs. 58.4 lb/bu in 2011) with a slight decrease (0.45%) in protein. Early harvest flour data from Kentucky indicates very similar performance to 2011.
