Harvest Report - June 8, 2012

Hard Red Winter
The 2012 HRW harvest continues despite rain across a wide area of the southern and central Great Plains over the past several days. Temperatures have moderated and slow dry down in those areas that received moisture. With weather clearing across the region it is expected that harvest will be back into full swing again by the weekend from Texas to the Nebraska border.

The Texas harvest is now nearly 50% complete overall. Oklahoma producers made little progress over the last week and still have 19% more to harvest. There is still a significant amount of irrigated wheat in the Oklahoma Panhandle that will need a few more days to mature and dry down. The Kansas harvest was also slowed this week due to rain but should be back into full swing by the weekend.

Nebraska and Colorado have both done test cutting, but neither are doing any large scale harvesting yet.

Protein took a big jump this week (now 12.4% overall average, up from 11.8% last week) as data is now being received from southern and western Kansas. Test weights dropped slightly, but are still well above 60 pounds per bushel. Dockage and total defects dropped this week.

Soft Red Winter
This week, 49 samples were analyzed and showed a significant decrease in average wheat moisture. Protein is down slightly, but thousand kernel weight and falling number values remain unchanged from the previous week’s averages. With 95% of the crop harvested in Arkansas, all samples have been collected and analyzed and are included in these averages. The test weight, protein, falling number values and thousand kernel weight averages from Arkansas are similar to 2011 data. Additional samples have been received from Missouri, Illinois and Kentucky, and samples from North Carolina, Virginia and Indiana should be analyzed by next week.

Harvesting in North Carolina proceeded quite rapidly this week as fields have finally become dry enough to allow combines to harvest; local showers, however, have occurred throughout the growing area. Only 3% of the Virginia crop has been harvested with 86% of the crop rated good to excellent. The Kentucky crop is about 30% completed, but only 52% is rated good to excellent. The Missouri crop continues to be harvested well ahead (almost three weeks) of the five-year average with 63% rated good to excellent. Indiana and Illinois are less than 10% harvested, and Ohio anticipates beginning harvest by late next week or the following week.
