Harvest Report - September 7, 2012

Hard Red Winter
The 2012 HRW harvest is complete with the final 24 samples from North Dakota in transit to the lab for testing and evaluation.

Overall the 2012 HRW harvest can be characterized as one that had wide-ranging yields and protein levels. Most wheat producers are happy with the final yields, especially considering the extreme weather of 2011 which carried into 2012, but which included timely moisture events that allowed average to above-average yields, and better protein than in 2011 and the five-year average.

With a small percentage of the samples still in the testing process, the overall 2012 crop has a test weight average which is higher than 2011 and the five-year average, while thousand kernel weight average is below 2011 and the five-year average. Dockage continues to be low, as it has been for past three years. Kernel moisture is lower than the five-year average.

Testing to date shows the 2012 crop with Alveograph P-value, L-value and P/L ratio better than the five-year average and the W value exceeding the five-year average. However, overall average loaf volume is significantly lower than 2011 and the five-year averages.

A final report on the 2012 HRW crop will be issued in early October when all testing has been completed and data has been evaluated.

Soft Red Winter
The final SRW report was issued on August 3, 2012. Many commercial mills have begun transitioning to the new crop following the early completion of the SRW harvest. Generally, millers report that this is the best crop in several years with low moisture and good test weight and thousand kernel weight results. The new wheat is milling well, yielding a slightly stronger flour. Depending on origin of the wheat, millers are seeing protein results equal to or slightly below last year, but in line with a typical crop year. Although the transition to new crop is still in the early stages of transition, millers are receiving positive feedback from customers as they begin baking with the new crop flour.

Hard Red Spring
The hard red spring harvest pushes to completion in the region with the only remaining samples yet to be collected and analyzed from Montana.  This harvest update represents approximately 93% of the samples that are to be analyzed.  Protein content, test weight, and falling number averages remain unchanged from last week.  Average protein content is 14.6% which is slightly below the final average of 14.8% for last year.  At this time about 51% of the samples analyzed have been greater than 14.5% protein content.  Test weight average is 60.9 lb/bu (80.1 kg/hl) compared to a final average last year of 60.1 lb/bu (79.1 kg/hl).  Average vitreous kernel content is 74% making the average grade of the crop at this time 1 NS.  Sample collection should wrap-up next week.

Soft White
The weather in the major wheat producing areas of the Pacific Northwest continues to be favorable for harvest. This week’s 63 soft white samples consist of 67% from Washington and 37% from Oregon. This week’s weighted averages indicated test weight at 61.0 lb/bu (80.2 kg/hl), unchanged from last week; moisture content at 9.6%, unchanged from last week; protein content at 9.8%, slightly up from 9.7% last week; and falling number value at 321 seconds, basically unchanged from last week. Other grading and quality factors remained practically the same.

Durum
The durum harvest is beginning to wind down with at least 90% of the crop harvested in Montana and North Dakota. The crop is averaging 1 HAD. Thousand kernel weight increased to 35.6 g compared to 34.9 g last week. Kernel vitreousness declined from 83.0% last week to 81.6% this week. There was little change in the other quality parameters from last week to this week.
