Harvest Report - May 25, 2012

Hard Red Winter
The 2012 HRW harvest is now in full swing in Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas. The northeastern Texas harvest is between 80%-90% complete and will soon be winding down. The area north of Dallas is in full swing and limited harvesting is now underway in the Texas Panhandle. Overall, Texas is now estimated to be 31% complete.

The Oklahoma harvest is estimated to be 28% complete. All parts of Oklahoma are now in some stage of harvest including far northwestern Oklahoma and the Panhandle. Far southwestern Oklahoma is now 90% complete.

The 2012 Kansas wheat harvest moved into high gear this week with cutting now being reported across the southern half of the state. The most active areas are south and southwest of Wichita.

Every state currently harvesting reports a wide range of yields from less than 20 to over 70 bushels per acre. Yields in Texas have generally been averaging just under 40 bushels per acre. Oklahoma reports yields close to 40 bushels per acre, with higher yields being reported southwest of Oklahoma City where good protein is also being reported. The few Kansas yields being reported range from 50 - 60 bushels per acre. Test weights also vary, but the average for all areas so far is over 60 pounds per bushel. All states are reporting a wide range of proteins (from under 10% to over 15%), but the overall average still remains just below 12%.

Soft Red Winter
The SRW harvest has progressed somewhat slower than anticipated with sampling confined to southern Arkansas. The remaining areas of Arkansas have just begun as has harvesting in the southernmost portion of Missouri. North Carolina has seen quite a bit of rain this past week, and no harvesting is expected until early next week. Approximately 15% of the crop has been harvested in Arkansas which is still almost 15% ahead of the five-year average, with 50% of the crop rated good to excellent. In Missouri, 80% of the crop has turned color which is about three weeks ahead of the normal pace. No activity has been reported in Kentucky, Illinois or Indiana, but harvest is expected to begin the last week of May or the first week of June in those states.
