Durum
The 2008 durum harvest continues at a good rate in spite of rain showers in some areas. As of August 25, according to the Agricultural Statistics Service office, harvest is 49 percent complete, behind 54 percent for last year but ahead of the five-year average of 45 percent. As of August 29, the average test weight is 59.3 lb/bu (77.3 kg/hl), similar to 59.9 lb/bu (78.0 kg/hl) for the 2007 crop. The average wheat protein content is 15.7 percent, higher than last year's 15.1 percent. The average dockage is 1.8 percent compared to 1.6 percent for last year. The falling number average is 406 seconds indicating the crop is sound thus far. The average grade is 2HAD, equal to last year's regional average. Total defects are 2.1 percent, higher than the regional average of 1.8 percent last year.
