The hard red spring wheat harvest has begun and is about two weeks ahead of normal.  Approximately 10% of the samples have been collected and analyzed.  The average test weight is 60.9 lb/bu (80.1 kg/hl) compared to last year's final average of 60.1 lb/bu (79.1 kg/hl).  Average protein content is 14.4% compared to 14.8% for last year's regional average.  A sound wheat crop is indicated by a falling number average of 429 seconds.  The current average DHV is 79% compared to last year's final of 77%.  High temperatures and lack of rainfall in the region have accelerated the rate of harvest in the hard red spring wheat growing region.
