This is the first weekly hard red spring wheat quality update for the 2006 harvest season. Twenty-six percent of the samples have been collected and analyzed for wheat quality. The average wheat protein content is 15.2 percent, up from last year's average of 14.5 percent. The average test weight of 60.4 lb/bu (79.5 kg/hl) is higher than last year's average of 60.1 lb/bu (79.1 kg/hl) and similar to the five-year average of 60.3 lb/bu (79.3 kg/hl). Falling number average is well over 400 seconds indicating a sound crop for the early part of harvest. Average DHV is 92 percent which is up from last year's average of 68 percent. HRS harvest is moving at a considerable pace from south to north in the growing region.
