|Soft red winter harvest has progressed through North Carolina and Virginia and is now starting in Maryland. Elevators are reporting 10-40 bu/acre in North Carolina after a dry spring. Virginia is reporting 40-50 bu/acre. In the Midwest, sampling is completed in Arkansas, but the remaining states are just beginning harvest due to rains during the last week. Illinois and Indiana averaged 1.5 inches of rain, while Kentucky had about one inch on average. Missouri has just begun harvesting in the bootheel.|
Grade data will be available next week, but compared to last year, CII test data from the southern section of North Carolina early harvest wheat showed a decrease in average test weight from 60.2 lb/bu to 56.9 lb/bu (79.2 to 74.9 kg/hl), and in 1000 kernel weight from 33.5 gm. to 28.1 gm., while protein increased from 11.2% to 12.5%. Falling number average is similar to 2009, but there were several samples below 300.
