Some hard red spring harvest progress was made in the region early in the week. Thunderstorms moved through the region last weekend and cooler temperatures are forecasted for the latter part of the week. Eighty-five percent of the samples have been collected and analyzed for wheat quality in this report. The average wheat protein remained at 14.9% reflecting no change from the past two weeks. Protein breakdown by state are: Minnesota 13.4%; Montana 15.4%; North Dakota 15.1%; and South Dakota 15.2%. Average test weight is 60.1 lb/bu (79.1 kg/hl) which is slightly down from the five-year average of 60.3 lb/bu (79.4 kg/hl). Average falling number is over 400 seconds. Average DHV is 85% making the average grade at this time 1 DNS. Regional protein breakdowns are as follows: 19% of the crop is less than 13.5% protein, 25% in the mid-range of 13.5%-14.5%, and 56% of the crop is greater than 14.5%.
