Harvest Report - July 10, 2009
HRW
Hard red winter harvest is virtually completed in Texas, Oklahoma and most of Kansas except for the northern Kansas areas. Test weights in Texas, excluding the Panhandle, have been in the 59 lbs/bu (78 kg/hl) range with proteins averaging 13.4%. This has held true in the southern half of Oklahoma, but test weights have tended to decrease slightly from central Oklahoma up to the Kansas border. The lower test weight is very likely a function of a late season freeze that severely affected northern Oklahoma southward into Texas.

Test weights in Kansas have increased to an average of over 60 lbs/bu (79 kg/hl). The higher test weight in Kansas has given way to generally lower proteins and much more variable protein percentages between locations. This could also be a function of late season moisture received in May along with cool temperatures during crop maturity resulting in very little stress on the portion of the crop which did receive the moisture.

Southeast into central Colorado are reporting very good early harvest yields, however, it has been too early to establish a trend on test weight or protein. Harvest is yet to get into full swing in northeastern Colorado, but this area continues to battle rain, wind and hail storms. While it is good news for summer crops and the precipitation and resulting cooler temperatures will benefit final production numbers and quality, most producers would like to see drying conditions so they can get what appears to be a very good crop in the bin.

Overall averages to date are: test weight 58.9 lbs/bu (77.5 kg/hl), 12.4% protein and an average thousand kernel weight of 29.3 g.
